Power Up Event Highlights how Boutique Hotels are Built to Win Direct!
Reading Time: 2 minutesWe had the privilege of joining the hospitality community at the Power Up event at HEDNA in Lisbon, hosted by our partners and friends at HSMAI. It reminded us of something we at GuestCentric believe deeply: for independent boutique hotels, direct bookings are more important and more achievable than ever.
For years, hoteliers have heard the same refrain: “Direct booking is dead. OTAs own the future.” But for boutique hotels built on character, identity, and unforgettable guest experiences, direct bookings represent the greatest growth opportunity.
Online travel agencies win guests with speed and certainty. A fast checkout, no surprises, everything wrapped neatly with one click. But certainty alone isn’t enough. What OTAs cannot sell is identity, and that is where boutique hotels thrive. Because when someone chooses a boutique stay, they’re not just booking a bed; they’re stepping into a story, seeking belonging, intimacy, and authenticity.
Today’s traveler doesn’t move in a straight booking path anymore. They dream on Instagram and TikTok, validate on Google, cross-check prices on OTAs, and even turn to AI assistants for suggestions. But the final decision still happens where trust and ease intersect. That’s why the direct experience—online and offline—matters more than ever. Direct is no longer a single channel, it’s every swipe, every saved reel, every chat message, every click.
And when they do arrive—whether in your lobby or on your website—the first question they silently ask is: “Do I belong here?” Price is never the opening act; belonging is. A couple sees themselves framed in golden-hour light with a glass of wine in hand. A family imagines their children safe, happy, and entertained. A business traveler seeks reassurance that things will run smoothly, from Wi-Fi to check-in. When your hotel answers that unspoken need for recognition, you win a direct relationship.
But the enemy of recognition is friction. Every unnecessary click, every clumsy form field, every delay risks losing a guest to an OTA. For a boutique hotel, direct booking must feel as effortless as the on-property hospitality itself. The booking journey should be quick, elegant, and mobile-first. Every door—your website, your social channels, even emerging AI platforms—should lead seamlessly back to your lobby. Because when the path is smooth, guests stay with you.
The most successful boutique hotels approach direct bookings with what we call the HyperCommerce Lens. They don’t just see booking as a transaction; they see it as an experience. That means crafting a narrative that sells identity instead of inventory, designing a booking flow that delivers certainty without friction, and unifying all channels so they pulse as one.
This isn’t theory. In Lisbon, a 40-room boutique hotel once struggled to lift direct bookings beyond 20 percent. Guests loved them on Instagram, but OTAs still closed the deal. By reframing their booking process as a conversation instead of a checkout page, they doubled their direct share to 40% in a single year.
Boutique hotels have something OTAs will never own: soul. Story. Belonging. Guests are not loyal to platforms; they are loyal to how you make them feel. Direct bookings grow when you align your design, your economics, and your identity. The tools are in your hands. The levers are already there. Pull them, and growth is yours.
We are grateful to HSMAI Region Europe, the organizers, the speakers, and all the hoteliers who joined us for Power Up at HEDNA. Your insights, energy, and passion made this event so impactful.
